Spain's cabinet has given its approval to a draft law aimed at tackling the misuse of AI-generated deepfakes and reinforcing consent regulations for the use of images. The proposed legislation seeks to increase protections for children, establishing 16 as the minimum age for consenting to the use of one's image. It also restricts the reuse of online photos, voices, and AI-generated likenesses without explicit permission, particularly for commercial or advertising purposes without consent. This move aligns with broader efforts within the European Union to regulate deepfake abuse, especially given rising concerns over non-consensual sexualized digital content and high-profile cases involving AI-generated images of minors. The draft legislation will undergo public consultation before final government approval and submission to parliament.
